At least two people have been killed in a destructive storm system that blew through the South.
The Associated Press reported that a boy and his mother were killed in northern Louisiana.
The child was found in a wooded area more than half a mile from his home outside of Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana.
The boy’s mother was found later a street away from their house.
At least 20 people were hurt, CNN reported.
Tiyia Stringfellow shared with CNN what she, her boyfriend and two young children experienced as they took shelter in their apartment in Farmerville, Louisiana.
“We were in the kitchen closet. All we heard was whistling, and my boyfriend got up to look outside of the window and he (saw) the tornado. The whole house was shaking and I (saw) my roof cave in, and the house went dark,” Stringfellow said.
None of her family members were injured.
The storm that spawned the tornadoes in Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana is part of a large system that is dumping snow and blizzards in the north-central part of the country, according to CNN.
While spring and summer are the typical seasons when tornadoes form, it’s not rare to see them in December.
The Dallas Morning News reported that this is the 13th December that has seen a tornado touch down in North Central Texas since the National Weather Service started tracking the data in 1950.
In 2015, a storm system produced a dozen tornadoes, including an EF-4 that killed 13 people, the newspaper reported.
