I remember getting the ticket to the Olympic Opening Ceremony and thinking, “I’m gonna watch people walk around the stadium waving flags? No; I don’t think so.” But I went. And oh my Lord - there’s nothing to compare it to. (Yes, when you get down to basics it seems rather simple - but it’s not.)
The pageantry was amazing; the sense of global unity inspiring. The Olympic flame cauldron was lit by a flaming arrow, which had been lit by the flame of the Olympic Torch (VERY cool).
And when Team USA entered Estadi Olimpic de Montjuic in Barcelona on Saturday 25 July 1992 I started blubbering like a baby.
1992. The first appearance of the Dream Team. Elton John performed in the same stadium the Opening Ceremony took place. Oh, and I met Bruce Jenner.
